Dr. Athena Pefkarou Recognized as Professional of the Year for Excellence in Pediatric Medicine
Cambridge Who's Who has selected Dr. Pefkarou as a Professional of the Year for 2011-2012
MIAMI, FL, September 12, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Athena C. Pefkarou, MD, FAAP, Associate Clinical Professor at Florida International University and Director of the Hematology/Oncology Clinics and the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program at Miami Children's Hospital, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in pediatric medicine.
Dr. Pefkarou has been serving Miami's pediatric community through Miami Children's Hospital for the past 34 years. She manages the Hematology/Oncology Clinics and the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program as well as treats patients, works with cancer survivors, and conducts research. Additionally, she has been the director of the United Order True Sisters (UOTS) cancer camp of MCH for 21 years, and is on the faculty mentoring program for medical students at FIU. The most gratifying aspect of her career, she says, is participating in a special niche in the medical field where, although the death rate is high, more and more children are surviving.
Driven by her desire to help people suffering from cancer and blood-related diseases, Dr. Pefkarou earned an MD at the University of London in 1973. A fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, she is affiliated with the Florida Medical Association, American Medical Association, and The American Society of Pediatric Hematology.
