CHICAGO, IL, February 28, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Local community organizer and researcher with a doctorate in nursing, Janice Phillips, PhD, FAAN, RN, has co-authored a state-of-the-art assessment of cancer nursing research, along with colleague, Cynthia R. King, PhD, NP, MSN, RN, FAAN.
This is the first oncology nursing text, over 500 pages in length, which has fully synthesized the research contributions of a distinguished cadre of oncology nurse scientists. Advancing Oncology Nursing Science is groundbreaking in its implications for strengthening oncology nursing research and solidifying oncology nursing as evidence based specialty.
The Oncology Nursing Society deems the book a must for "practitioners to nurse investigators, from faculty to graduate students, all manner of health professionals will want to add this title to their nursing library."
Dr. Janice Phillips is an accomplished African-American leader in the field of minority health and health disparities. She serves on the Board of the Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force. Through these Boards, she has helped pass groundbreaking state legislation in 2007 to require insurance companies to cover potentially lifesaving clinical breast exams and to establish state standards for the exams, which are critical to the early detection of breast cancer. She worked to ensure the Illinois General Assembly passed comprehensive and innovative breast cancer disparities reduction legislation in 2008 as a response to the staggering and well-documented breast cancer mortality rate among African-American women in Chicago.
Her pioneering work in breast cancer has resulted in a number of very prestigious awards. In 2000, she was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing for her contributions to oncology nursing nationally and internationally. Other prestigious awards include the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award (University of Chicago), Nursing Excellence Award (Nursing Spectrum) and Women of Excellence Award (Chicago Defender newspaper). Her numerous presentations and publications have inspired many and continue to help shape the research careers of graduate students throughout the nation.
Most recently at the University of Chicago Medical Center, Dr. Phillips was instrumental in leading the Department of Nursing in their efforts devoted to achieving Magnet recognition. This prestigious recognition is awarded to institutions for nursing excellence. Dr. Phillips successfully assumed primary leadership in building nursing research infrastructure in an institution that lacked a school or college of nursing affiliation. The University of Chicago Department of Nursing received Magnet Recognition Feb 2007, two years after Dr. Phillips returned to the university in 2005.
