Teresa J. Vietti Distinguished by Cambridge Who's Who for Pediatric Oncology Research
Dr. Vietti has more than 50 years of professional experience researching and developing treatments for children with blood and cancer dieseases.

/Cancer News Articles/ - Saint Louis, MO, March 7, 2008 Teresa J. Vietti, Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and Radiology for Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of pediatric hematology/oncology.

Dr. Vietti has more than 50 years of professional experience researching and developing treatments for children with blood and cancer dieseases. As Chair of the Pediatric Oncology Group, Dr. Vietti contributed to the advancement of 1,000 scientific investigators and 90 childhood cancer centers across the United States and Canada. Her major areas of expertise include finding new, more effective agents and therapeutic regimens for children with cancer. Dr. Vietti, her colleagues and 12 scientific laboratories obtained research support for their work from the National Cancer Institute as well as their local communities.

Prior to joining the Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Vietti began her research career in pediatric hematology/oncology at the University of Texas Medical School in Dallas in 1958. In 1961 she moved to St. Louis Children's Hospital to become the Division Chief of Hematology and Oncology and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine. She and her colleagues in the other disciplines (surgery, pathology, radiation therapy, and radiology) joined the Southwest Oncology Group and Dr. Vietti became the principal investigator at Children's Hospital. She was promoted to Chair of the Acute Leukemia Committee of the Group. When their adult colleagues joined the Group she was elected Vice Chair of the Pediatric Division. This created a huge group and the adult division quickly usurped all of the resources. For this reason the pediatrician group split from the adult oncology group to form the Pediatric Oncology Group. Dr. Vietti was elected chair of the group and continued in this position for the next 13 years. During her career the survival of children with cancer went from almost zero to above 90 percent.

Dr.Vietti received her bachelor of arts degree from Rice Institue in 1949 and, in 1953, she received her MD from Baylor University School of Medicine in Houston.. Dr. Vietti was a member of The National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, the Federal Drug Administration, the International Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Pediatric Society, the American Society for Cancer Education and the American Association for Cancer Research. In addition to publishing more than 200 articles in medical journals, authoring and co-authoring many abstracts, co-editing a textbook of Pediatric Oncology, she was editor of the American Journal of Hematology and has authored and co-authored many book chapters. Dr. Vietti has been the honored recipient of many awards which includes the UNICO Award, the distinguished Career Award from the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Return of the Child Award from the American Leukemia Society, the Spirit of Health Award from the Ameerican Cancer Society, and the 21st Century Award in 2007 for the Top Medical Scientist Award from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
