Names Needed To Build The Cancer Monument
The Cancer Monument is collecting 60,000 names of those affected by cancer - living or deceased - to be honored on The Cancer Monument.
/Cancer News Articles/ - ALLEN, TX, September 30, 2006 - The Cancer Monument, Inc. is leading a unique and compelling grass roots movement to build a monument that will educate and celebrate the inspirational courage of our heroes in the War on Cancer. The 60' diameter, black granite monument will contain the inscribed names of 60,000 people from across the world who, living or deceased, have battled the disease regardless of cancer type. Names can be inscribed on the monument by completing the downloadable form available at www.thecancermonument.org Funds raised from the Honoree name drive will build the monument and construction will begin once all Honoree names have been received. The Cancer Monument is to be built on allocated parkland in Allen, Texas and is designed to resemble a human cell.
"This monument takes away the power of the diagnosis and gives it back to those who battle cancer. We are not victims. We are heroes in an on-going war, states Michelle Miller. Miller has been battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma since 2000 and is the creator of the monument and founding President of The Cancer Monument Incorporated, a 501(c)3 charity dedicated to innovative methods in education, prevention and research advocacy.
"60,000 names are only a fraction of the cancer population but significant enough to teach and tell our heroic story to future generations," Miller said.
The Foundation's Honoree Campaign efforts are earmarked for a minimum 5 years, but can be completed in much less time. Honoree names have already been received from several states, but the Foundation is far from their 60,000 Honoree goal and needs more names. Inscription spaces are limited and once all names are received no other names will be inscribed.
"I believe that the monument's continuous presence will encourage personal change in the lives of others and will perhaps prevent new cancers and ultimately, save lives," states Honoree, Rhonda Dublin of Plano.
"The Cancer Monument is a powerful opportunity right here in our community and documents the battle while giving hope and inspiration to the undiagnosed and those who have not yet enlisted in this fight, states Maureen LupPlace, Garland resident, oncology nurse and 21-year cancer survivor.
